Dr. Amanda Brown joins Dr. Jim Curtiss at Curtiss Dentistry
In the Fall of ‘23, Dr. Amanda Brown moved from Virginia to East Tennessee to accept a faculty role at Lincoln Memorial University, College of Dental Medicine in Knoxville.
It wasn’t long before she met Dr. Jim Curtiss, the founder and leader of Curtiss Dentistry in Maryville, Tennessee.
“I admired Dr. Curtiss from the moment I met him. He’s a highly skilled clinical dentist, and he also cares about his community and his patients,. I’m thrilled to join his team in Maryville.”

A family business.
When Amanda Brown was an 8th grader in Virginia, she wanted a job.
Well, more accurately, she wanted some extra spending money. But even as an 8th grader, she was entrepreneurial enough to realize a job could help solve that.
Amanda’s dad was a respected dentist in town, and when he heard she was looking for seasonal work, he invited her to come help him out at his dental office.
“I ended up working at his dental office all the way through high school. Every summer and every break, I was at the office working as a receptionist, dental assistant, and cleaner. If it didn’t require a license or advanced training, I did it!”

Amanda liked working in her dad’s dental office, but she never planned on becoming a dentist. She went to college with plans to become a teacher.
But during a semester abroad studying in Spain, she started giving serious thought to dentistry.
"My biology grades were good, and when I came back to the US after my semester abroad, I told my Dad I thought I might want be a dentist, like him.” - Dr. Amanda Brown
After graduating from dental school, Amanda joined her dad in private practice in Virginia.
She got to practice with her dad for 5 years before he passed away. And over the next decade, Dr. Brown led growth and expansion.
She added associates and acquired another nearby practice. Along the way, she and her husband (Dave ) raised two boys - Logan and Sam - in their hometown.
After many successful years growing a business and raising a family, Amanda and her husband felt like it might be time for another chapter.
“My husband and I started visiting East Tennessee over a decade ago, and we fell in love with it. It looks a lot like Virginia, with more water, and we especially fell in love with the people.
When our younger son graduated from high school, we decided the time was right to leave our hometown and start our next chapter together. We sold my dad’s practice and started to seriously think abut moving to the Knoxville area.”

With the credentials and experience that came with decades of private practice, Dr. Brown was finally ready to teach. The dean at Lincoln Memorial University, College of Dental Medicine invited Dr. Brown to join the faculty.
“Getting an offer to teach dentistry at LMU’s new dental school was what finally convinced me and Dave to make the move to East Tennessee.”

A new chapter at Curtiss Dentistry
Teaching helped get Dr. Brown to Tennessee, but it wasn’t a full-time job. Amanda continued to patiently search for a respected practice she could call home for the next decade or more.
And Dr. Curtiss is glad to have her too.
“When I met Dr. Brown and learned about her skills and experience, I liked her. Over the last few months, we’ve spent more time together.
She’s visited Curtiss Dentistry and even seen some of our patients. She’s a good person and a great dentist and I’m glad to call her a new colleague.
Maryville is going to love her.”
